Video Description
The meniscus is a soft, cushioning structure inside the knee that sits between the thigh bone and the shin bone. It acts as a shock absorber and helps distribute the body’s load. There is one on the inner side and one on the outer side of each knee.
When it is injured, the knee can become painful, swollen, and stiff.
This page covers how meniscus injuries happen, their symptoms and grades, and how physiotherapy supports recovery.
How it happens
- Suddenly squatting or getting up from the floor when not used to it
- Accidents, jumping, or sport without proper preparation
- Twisting and turning through the knee
- Degenerative (age-related) changes, where the meniscus gradually wears and tears
A meniscus tear can increase wear on the bones over time, so it is worth addressing.
Symptoms
- Pain often felt along the joint line, at the front of the knee between the two bones
- Swelling and stiffness through the knee
- A popping or clicking sound with movement; sometimes the knee feels it needs to ‘release’ before it moves freely
Grades and recovery
On assessment a physiotherapist can suggest a meniscus injury, and an MRI can confirm it and show the type and stage of tear — mild, moderate, or severe.
- Mild: often heals in around 4 to 6 weeks
- Moderate: often 6 to 12 weeks
- Severe: can take considerably longer
For mild and moderate tears, rest is followed by physiotherapy to support healing and by exercises. While recovering, it helps to avoid squatting, stair climbing, and prolonged standing. Related knee injuries such as ACL tears may need their own rehabilitation. Timelines vary between individuals.
Booking an assessment
If your knee catches, clicks, or stays swollen after a twist, an assessment can check the meniscus. Learn more about knee pain physiotherapy or call to book.
