Video Description
Meralgia paresthetica is an unfamiliar name for a condition many people actually have without knowing it. It causes a burning, tingling, or numb sensation on the front or outer thigh — and, unusually, there is often no pain in the thigh or the back.
People often describe it by tapping the thigh to show where the odd sensation is.
This page covers what meralgia paresthetica feels like, what causes it, and how physiotherapy may help.
How it feels
A distinguishing feature is that the sensation is present in most positions — sitting, standing, and even lying down — rather than only during activity. This helps separate it from other causes of leg symptoms that ease with rest.
What causes it
The symptoms come from compression of a nerve that supplies sensation to the outer thigh, arising from the upper lumbar spine (around the L1–L2 level, part of the lumbar plexus). Common contributors include:
- The period after pregnancy
- Poorly controlled diabetes
- Consistently tight clothing, or a tight waist belt
- A seat belt worn tightly during long journeys without adjusting its position
How physiotherapy helps
A physiotherapist can assess whether lower back nerve compression is the source. Where it is, physiotherapy management combines treatment and specific exercises aimed at reducing the compression and easing the symptoms. Addressing contributing habits — such as belt and clothing pressure — is part of the plan.
If your symptoms involve leg pain rather than this thigh sensation, related conditions such as sciatica or sacroiliac joint pain may be worth ruling out.
Booking an assessment
If you have burning or numbness on your outer thigh, an assessment can check whether a nerve is being compressed. Learn more about back pain physiotherapy or call to book.
