It may seem surprising that physiotherapy is relevant to headaches, but tight neck muscles are a recognised trigger for headache in many people. Some feel it at the back of the head on waking, some after starting work, and some across the forehead or the top of the head.
A common thread is posture — how the neck is held during study, desk work, and phone use.
This page covers how neck tension leads to headache, who tends to get it, and how physiotherapy and posture correction may help.
Why the neck causes headaches
The neck muscles attach up to the base of the skull, so sustained tension in the neck can be felt as head pain. It affects all ages:
- Students and children who bend for long periods to read and write
- Desk workers who sit at a screen for long stretches, leaving the neck stiff and tight through the neck and upper shoulders
- Adults over 50, where earlier neck problems left unaddressed lead to weaker neck muscles
- Heavy mobile phone use, where screen time and position add to the load
What helps day to day
Simple changes often reduce the strain:
- Take a break roughly every half hour of screen work, reading, or phone use — look up and to the sides to move the neck
- Keep the neck aligned with the body rather than pushed forward
- Avoid sleeping on your stomach, which stops the neck keeping its natural curve; sleeping on your back or side lets the neck relax
- Avoid stacking too many pillows or using a very high pillow, which keeps the neck under tension
How physiotherapy helps
Posture correction is a distinct part of physiotherapy management. Alongside it, neck physiotherapy typically includes both strengthening and stretching exercises for the neck muscles. When the neck muscles are working well, headache driven by neck tension often reduces. Persistent phone-posture strain can also lead to text neck.
Booking an assessment
If headaches seem to start in your neck, an assessment can check whether posture and neck muscles are involved. Learn more about neck pain physiotherapy or call to book.
